Abstract

Aliterature review on the incidence of upper eyelid ptosis (blepharoptosis, BP) is presented.

Purpose – to evaluate the incidence of BP reported in studies from different countries and across various age groups, and to identify the most common potential risk factors.
Special attention is given to the development of ptosis following ophthalmic surgery, aiming to clarify its underlying mechanisms and to emphasize prevention strategies for ophthalmologists. BP is a common complication after eye surgery and may arise from multiple factors. Various surgical techniques have been employed to investigate its primary causes. Considering the observations of some authors that the risk of BP increases with age, it is important to include this information in the informed consent of patients undergoing eye surgery. To reduce the incidence of postoperative BP, the surgical approach, the selected tactics, and appropriate adjustment of the technique should be carefully considered.
