SUMMARY

Aims: An experimental study of the effect of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) on the viability of the photoreceptors of rd10 mice by measuring the content of red/green and blue opsins.

Methods
The experiment was conducted in animal models of retinal pigment dystrophy (PD) in rd10 mice. Animals of the treatment group (n : 33) were intraperitoneally injected with PABA in saline (50 mg I kg) 6 times a week from the third day after birth till 4.5 weeks of age. Animals in the control group (n : 29) were intraperitoneally injected with saline using the same protocol. T-test was used to compare the difference between two groups (p < 0,05, unpaired two-tailed t-test).

Results
The content of the redlgreen opsin was significantly higher in the retina of mice treated with PABA at 3 and4.5 weeks of age (P < 0.05). At4.5 weeks of age the contents of the red I greenopsin in the retina of animals treated with PABA was 2.4 times higher in the treatment group compared with the control group.

Conclusions
The evaluation of the content of opsin in the retina shows that systemic administration of PABA promotes the survival of cone photoreceptors in rd10 mice with retinal degeneration. Thus, PABA helps to protect against oxidative damage of cones and can be an effective addition to the antioxidant therapy of retinal pigment dystrophy.
