SUMMARY
The success rate for PK approaches zero for the subset of patients with repeated corneal graft failure, chemical
bums, herpes simplexvirus infection, and autoimmuneinflammatory diseases. Patients with such diseases may
require alternatives such as use of an artificial cornea, or keratoprosthesis.
We report 75-year-old one eye male patient with repeated corneal graft, who failed to respond to previous
surgical treatment. A Boston keratoprosthesis type I was implanted in his right eye. The operation was completed
uneventfully and he enjoyed good visual recovery with no postoperative complications till present time. To the
best of our knowledge, this is the hrst case of keratoprosthesis implantation in Azerbaijan. The patient’s visual
acuity improved from seeing hand movements before the operation to 0.1. Keratoprosthesis requires more detailed
postoperative follow up regimen than standard keratoplasty. Successful outcome requires patient compliance,
more frequent follow up visits and more demands on physician time. However, in cases where further keratoplasty
appears futile, in selected patients the Boston keratoprosthesis type I may offer a valuable alternative.
