SUMMARY

Aim - since hypoxia and hypercapnia cause a number of problems in the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), the article provides a study of the effect of OSAS on the thickness of the cornea, as well as the study of changes in the visual feld.

Material and methods
The study included a control group consisting of 59 patients diagnosed with OSAS, delivered at the Sleep Laboratory of the Department of Pulmonary Diseases of the Medical Faculty of the University of Ankara, and 19 healthy volunteers. In the light group, the index of apne / hypopnea was 19 patients (37 eyes), in the middle group 16 patients (31 eyes) and in the severe group 24 patients (47 eyes). The control group consisted of 19 patients. The thickness of the central cornea of patients was measured by ultrasound using a pachymetry device (Ocuscan RXP Alcon USA). All patients were treated with a standard 24 - 2 perimetry SITA (Humphrey Field Analyzer Model 750 i, Zeiss, USA).

Results
When compared with the control group high PSD values were found in the right eye in patients with OSAS lungs and in the left eye in patients with mean OSAS (p = 0.051, p = 0.033, respectively). On average, in the left eye in all OSAS patients the thickness of the central cornea was lower than when compared with the control group.

Conclusion
In the present investigation we made a comparative analysis of results of left and right eyes of OSAS patients and control group. The patient were examined only one time. That’s why explanation of difference between the indices of both eyes it is necessary to increase the number of examinations and the number of patients. For this purpose the continue the investigation at present. The results of research indicate that OSAS both in other organs and in the organ of eye may cause some pathologies.
