SUMMARY
Purpose. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of subconjunctival Ologen implantation when used during combined trabeculotomy-trabeculectomy in congenital glaucoma patients.
Material and methods
In this prospective case series 10 eyes of 8 patients with congenital glaucoma were
enrolled. Conventional fomix based combined trabeculotomy-trabeculectomy with implantation of subconjunctival
biodegradable collagen implant (Ologen) was performed in all patients. The preoperative intraocular pressure
(IOP) measurement, patients age were recorded. There were monthly follow-up after surgery. At each visit, the
examination included measurements of IOP, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, bleb evaluation, corneal diameter and
axial length measurements, funduscopy under anesthesia. Any complications were recorded at the end of each
examination
Results
Mean duration of follow-up was 4.4 months (range 3-6 months). Mean preoperative IOP was 40.4
mm Hg (range 29-51 mm Hg) and mean postoperative IOP was 13.6 mm Hg (range 11-17 mm Hg) at month
3 (P<0.001) and 13.4 mm Hg (range 10-16 mm Hg) at last visit (P<0.001). None of the patients experienced
systemic or ocular complication related to Ologen.
Conclusion
Combined trabeculotomy-trabeculectomy with implantation of Ologen is a safe and effective
surgical method in patients with open angle glaucoma, but longer duration of follow-up in larger number of
patients is needed.
