SUMMARY

Purpose: To determine the surgical outcome after initial surgery in children with congenital glaucoma (CG).

Material and methods
11 eyes of 7 consecutive patients who underwent primary combined trabeculotomy-
trabeculectomy for CG from September 2008 to November 2009 in Zarifa Alieva National Eye Center were studied.
The main outcome measures were pre- and postoperative intraocular pressures (IOPs), corneal clarity, visual aciuties
(in whom it was possible), refractive errors, time of surgical failure, complications, and factors assocaited with poor
outcome.

Results
IOP reduced from 31.5±7.5 mmHg to 14.9±5.9 mm Hg. The mean follow-up period was 13.5 months
(median, 6.5 months). Preoperatively, 10 eyes (90.9%) had significant corneal edema. Postoperatively, normal corneal
transparency was achieved in 7 eyes (63,6%). Data on Snellen visual acuity were avialable in 1 patient (14.3%). At the
final follow-up visit he had visual acuity 0.4. Myopia (mean spherical equivalent, 6.1D) was the most common (9 eyes-
81.8%) refractive error. There were no major intraoperative complications, bleb-related infection, or endophthalmitis.

Conclusions
Combined trabeculotomy-trabeculectomy as the primary surgical procedure offers long-term high
efficacy in the control of IOP without medical treatment, is rarely associated with surgical complications, and a low need
for re-operations.
