SUMMARY

Purpose: To assess the safety and efficacy of canaloplasty in adults with open-angle glaucoma (OAG).

Methods
Nine eyes of 9 OAG patients underwent canaloplasty surgery at National Ophthalmological Centre
named after acad. Zarifa Alieva. Six eyes of 6 patients underwent canaloplasty alone and 3 eyes of 3 patients
underwent canaloplasty combined with cataract surgery. Canaloplasty was performed with a 10-0 polypropylene
tensioning suture guided by Glaucolight microcatheter. All patients were followed up for 3 months. Changes in
intraocular pressure (IOP) and postoperative complications were examined.

Results
Mean preoperative IOP was 30.6 ± 4.7 mm Hg and decreased postoperatively, being 12.4 ± 2.0 mm Hg
at 1 month, 14.4± 2.5 mm Hg at 3 months. Mean number of antiglaucoma drops was 2.3 ± 0.5 before canaloplasty
and decreased to 0.11 ± 0.33 at 3 months after canaloplasty (p < 0.01). The most frequent postoperative complication
was mild hyphema (44.4 %), which disappeared within 7 days after surgery.

Conclusions
Canaloplasty is an exciting but challenging procedure that aims to re-establish the natural outflow
system. Canaloplasty led to a significant IOP reduction in adult patients with open-angle glaucoma and had an
excellent short term postoperative safety profile. We need long period data to analyze effect of canaloplasty in
adults with OAG.
