SUMMARY
Adjustable sutures have been used since 1977. The goal of the adjustable suture is to allow an additional opportunity to realign the eyes soon after strabismus surgery. Currently described procedures for adjustment require adjustment for all patients, typically within 24 hours after surgery. This procedure is often uncomfortable for the patient and stressful for the surgeon. Objective of our study is to describe a new, adjustable suture technique for strabismus surgery that is safe and effective and allows for adjustment during the postoperative week only when required. 42 adjustments were performed. The short adjustable suture is a safe and effective variation of the standard slip-knot adjustable suture technique. It allows for adjustment up to 6 days postoperatively with minimal patient discomfort. When adjustment is not indicated, the suture can be left in place to absorb.
